چکیده

The apparently inimical relationship between magnetism and superconductivity has come under increasing scrutiny in a wide range of material classes, where the free energy landscape conspires to bring them in close proximity to each other. Particularly enigmatic is the case when these phases microscopically interpenetrate, though the manner in which this can be accomplished remains to be fully comprehended. Here, we present combined measurements of elastic neutron scattering, magnetotransport, and heat capacity on a prototypical heavy fermion system, in which antiferromagnetism and superconductivity are observed. Monitoring the response of these states to the presence of the other, as well as to external thermal and magnetic perturbations, points to the possibility that they emerge from different parts of the Fermi surface. Therefore, a single 4f state could be both localized and itinerant, thus accounting for the coexistence of magnetism and superconductivity.

Magnetic excitations as driving force of superconductivity in CeCu2Si2

Coexistence or competition of superconductivity and magnetic order remains an important issue in condensed matter physics. While conventional superconductivity is generally incompatible with magnetism, the magnetic 4f or 5f moments in heavy-fermion superconductors play a crucial role for the appearance of unconventional superconductivity. Similar to the high-temperature cuprate superconductors,...

Electronic duality in strongly correlated matter.

Superconductivity develops from an attractive interaction between itinerant electrons that creates electron pairs, which condense into a macroscopic quantum state-the superconducting state. On the other hand, magnetic order in a metal arises from electrons localized close to the ionic core and whose interaction is mediated by itinerant electrons. The dichotomy between local moment magnetic orde...

Magnetism and superconductivity of heavy fermion matter

The interplay of magnetism and unconventional superconductivity (d singlet wave or p triplet wave) in strongly correlated electronic system (SCES) is discussed with recent examples found in heavy fermion compounds. A short presentation is given on the formation of the heavy quasiparticle with the two sources of a local and intersite enhancement for the effective mass. Two cases of the coexisten...

Evidence for spiral magnetic order in the heavy fermion material CeRhIn5

The interplay between magnetism and superconductivity in heavy fermion materials has attracted much interest since the discovery of heavy fermion superconductivity. In several of the Ce based heavy fermion compounds, the behavior of the magnetic order can be understood qualitatively in terms of a simple picture, in which long-range RudermanKittel-Kasuya-Yosida ~RKKY! interactions between the Ce...

Magnetism and unconventional superconductivity in CenMmIn3n+2m heavy-fermion crystals

We review magnetic, superconducting and non-Fermi-liquid properties of the structurally layered heavy-fermion compounds CenMmIn3n+2m (M=Co, Rh, Ir). These properties suggest d-wave superconductivity and proximity to an antiferromagetic quantum-critical point.
